Student Leadership

Leadership is the ability to inspire and guide others toward a shared goal, creating positive change along the way. By taking on leadership opportunities, students can strengthen their interpersonal skills, communicate with confidence, and build meaningful, supportive relationships within their community.

“People who lead - whether or not they have a title - strive to make things better for those around them”

Mark Sanborn

Student leadership is a vital part of the SBS experience, empowering young people to grow as confident and responsible members of the school community. Our leadership programmes achieve this by:

  • Amplifying student voice — ensuring students are heard and represented through our Student Council.
  • Encouraging peer support — fostering a culture where students help and uplift one another.
  • Promoting excellence — actively supporting both academic and co-curricular achievement.
  • Building character — developing self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness.
  • Cultivating leadership — equipping students with lifelong skills to lead and inspire others.
  • Preparing for the future — helping students develop the confidence and capability to thrive in real-life situations.
Student Leadership
School Council

The KS3 student council consists of a student-elected Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy, and Deputy Head Girl. The KS4 and KS5 student council consists of student-elected prefects from Years 10, 11, 12 who are led by a Head Boy and Head Girl.

The student council gives students a formal voice in shaping their school experience. It acts as a bridge between students and staff, sharing ideas and feedback to improve school life and ensure decisions reflect student needs. Prefects develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while planning events, promoting wellbeing, and strengthening the school’s community spirit. Through advocacy, collaboration, and organising activities, the student council empowers students to take responsibility, influence positive change, and help create an engaging, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Mentoring in Secondary

Mentoring is the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor. In a school setting, we will always encourage students to support their peers in their personal or academic development. Being a mentor serves as a way to give back and is an important development and learning experience. Teaching others is the best way to learn yourself. In the same way, mentors become more competent as leaders and communicators as they guide and help rising talent.

What our student leaders love about Safa?

Safa British School Student Leadership

"Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose."

Myles Munroe

At Safa the aim of the student council is to serve as an essential body that represents the voice of the student community and contributes significantly to school life. The student council is composed of elected representatives from each year group, and it gives students the opportunity to take on leadership roles, engage in decision-making processes, and work collaboratively with staff and fellow students to improve the school environment.

Student council members often participate in organising events and promoting school spirit and unity. Additionally, they act as a bridge between students and administration, ensuring that students’ ideas, suggestions, and concerns are heard and considered. Through regular meetings, council members discuss ways to enhance the academic and extracurricular experiences at the school, taking part in decisions that affect student life, such as implementing new programs, improving facilities, or planning community activities.

In serving as role models, student council members develop important skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which can benefit them throughout their academic and professional careers. Their work encourages a sense of responsibility and fosters a strong sense of community within the school, promoting values of inclusivity, respect, and collaboration. Overall, the student council plays a vital role in shaping a positive and dynamic school culture here at Safa British School.
