The House System is an integral part of the lives of pupils, parents and staff at Safa British school. Every pupil and member of staff (with the exception of PLT) belong to one of our 4 Houses. The theme, colour and crest design for our House System were all designed and created by our children here at SBS following a huge competition including children, staff and parents.
The House system helps to create a sense of belonging within the wider SBS family and it fosters an ethos of teamwork and community spirit. Each house has a designated house captain and deputy captain who are role models to all their peers. They are responsible for promoting the ethos of their house and encourage participation of all members during competitions and events.
Throughout the year, children are encouraged to take part in and support a variety of fun activities and events to earn points for their House. Both achievement and participation are celebrated regularly through phase and year group assemblies. There are bronze, silver, gold and amethyst certificates and prizes to be achieved throughout the year to actively encourage participation.
In order to promote student leadership, children will be given the opportunity to apply with a written letter to become a House Captain & Deputy House Captain. These applicants will be interviewed by PLT and present their ideas. The successful applicants will be appointed as House Captains & Deputy House Captain.
In Secondary, House Captains are chosen every two years. Students must go through a rigorous campaign process before they are elected by students. House Captains are in charge of their own House Team on Microsoft Teams, where they share updates and motivate their fellow house members.
Class teachers and members of staff can award house points for a variety of reasons including children’s efforts in lessons, kindness & understanding and contribution to the wider community . These are recorded and totals collected each week via Epraise. The leading houses are shared via our weekly newsletter.
Each class has a certificate that is taken to Music, PE, Swimming, Art, Islamic and Arabic each lesson. At the end of the lesson, the teacher will present this to a child which will award them with three house points.
Each half term, a House Points competition will be organised linking to a variety of subject areas, for example an Eco Challenge. This term Safa British School finished 2nd in the whole of the UAE for recycling the most bottles at the DGrade Simply Bottles competition.
The House system plays an important role in the secondary school, providing students with the opportunity to collaborate and work together to achieve common goals. The houses represent the building blocks of comradery and identity among our students; they are the vessels through which every child feels supported, fostering a sense of pride and belonging in our students. The House System cultivates achievement through the celebration of success, offering opportunities for all and igniting a sense of community.
The Secondary House captains fall part of the Secondary Student Council. Students apply for their position of interest, campaign themselves and then they are voted into council.
The House System is a continuous growth point; establishing new routines and events in order to fully embrace a healthy competitive spirit in a range of activities.
